What is the history of Audi Sport in motorsport?

Audi Sport dominated Le Mans in the 2000s-2010s with 13 overall wins, pioneered quattro rally cars, and entered Formula 1 in 2026.

Major titles: 13 Le Mans 24 Hours wins (2000-2014); multiple DTM & 1980s WRC titles

Audi Sport is the motorsport division of German manufacturer Audi, with a competition history spanning rallying, endurance racing, touring cars and, most recently, Formula 1.

Audi first made its name in the early 1980s, when its four-wheel-drive quattro revolutionized the World Rally Championship and won both manufacturers' and drivers' titles. That technology, together with the 'Silver Arrows' heritage of predecessor Auto Union, underpins the brand's racing identity.

Audi's greatest era came at the Le Mans 24 Hours, where it took 13 overall victories between 2000 and 2014 with the R8, the diesel-powered R10 TDI, the R15 and the R18. In 2006 it won Le Mans with a diesel car for the first time, and in 2012 it claimed the first win for a hybrid. Audi also collected numerous DTM touring car titles before withdrawing from top-level prototype racing after 2016.

In 2026 Audi entered Formula 1 as a full works team, taking over the Sauber operation and opening a new chapter in the brand's motorsport story.
