What is the history of Hendrick Motorsports in NASCAR?

Founded by Rick Hendrick in 1984, Hendrick Motorsports is NASCAR's winningest Cup Series team, with a record 15 championships.

Founded: 1984
Major titles: Record 15 NASCAR Cup Series championships

Hendrick Motorsports was founded in 1984 by North Carolina car dealer Rick Hendrick, originally competing as All-Star Racing. It has grown into the most successful team in NASCAR Cup Series history.

The organization holds the all-time records for both Cup Series race wins and championships. Its 15 Cup Series titles were won by five different drivers: Jeff Gordon (four), Jimmie Johnson (a record-tying seven), Terry Labonte (1996), Chase Elliott (2020) and Kyle Larson (2021 and 2025).

Jimmie Johnson's five consecutive championships from 2006 to 2010 stand as a modern NASCAR record. In May 2021 Hendrick surpassed the legendary Petty Enterprises to become the winningest team in Cup Series history, and has since passed 300 points-paying victories at the sport's top level.

Based in Concord, North Carolina, and fielding Chevrolets, Hendrick Motorsports has run some of the biggest names in the sport and continues to field multiple full-time entries, remaining the benchmark organization in NASCAR's premier series.
