What is the history of the Williams Formula 1 team?

Founded by Frank Williams and Patrick Head in 1977, Williams won nine Constructors' and seven Drivers' F1 titles, mostly in the 1980s and 90s.

Founded: 1977
Major titles: 9 Constructors' + 7 Drivers' championships (F1)

Williams Grand Prix Engineering was founded in 1977 by Frank Williams and engineer Patrick Head, and quickly grew into one of Formula 1's leading teams.

The team took its first win in 1979 and its first Drivers' and Constructors' Championships in 1980 with Alan Jones. Through the 1980s and 1990s Williams was a powerhouse, winning titles with Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve, often with dominant Honda- and Renault-powered cars.

Its last championships came in 1997, giving the team nine Constructors' and seven Drivers' titles in total - among the highest tallies in the sport.

The following decades were far leaner. The founding family sold the team to investment firm Dorilton Capital in 2020, and Frank Williams died in 2021. Now based in Grove, England, and led by team principal James Vowles, Williams competes in the sport's midfield while rebuilding toward the front of the grid.
