How does the Formula 1 points system work?

F1 awards points to the top ten finishers on a 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 scale, with a separate smaller scale for Sprint races, counting toward both the Drivers' and Constructors' championships.

In a Formula 1 Grand Prix, championship points go to the top ten finishers on this scale:

Position12345678910
Points251815121086421

Everyone from 11th down scores zero. This 25-point-for-a-win scale has been used since 2010.

Sprint races — the shorter Saturday races held at selected events — pay a smaller amount to the top eight: 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1.

A bonus point for the fastest lap was awarded between 2019 and 2024 (to a driver finishing in the top ten), but it was dropped from the 2025 season.

Points count toward two championships at once: the Drivers' Championship, tallied per driver, and the Constructors' Championship, which adds up both cars from each team. The driver and the team with the most points at the end of the season are crowned champions.
