The weekend
Most Formula E rounds compress into a single day — practice in the morning, qualifying at midday, the E-Prix in the late afternoon — with double-headers running the whole programme twice. Qualifying is unlike anything else in motorsport: the 22-car field splits into two groups of eleven by championship position, each getting ten minutes at race power (300kW). The top four from each group then go to head-to-head knockout duels — quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final — at a full 350kW, with the duel winner taking pole and the rest of the grid filled alternately from the group times.
Points
The top ten score 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. Pole position is worth three points, and the fastest lap one — provided its setter finishes in the top ten; otherwise the quickest driver inside the top ten collects it. That makes a maximum haul of 29 points per race.
What decides things
Energy management rules everything: the battery won't run a race flat out, so drivers lift, coast and regenerate constantly, and races often run as a peloton with nobody wanting to lead into the wind. Attack Mode adds the tactical layer — arm the system, run off-line through an activation zone, and collect a 50kW boost that also unlocks four-wheel drive on the Gen3 Evo. At designated races, Pit Boost adds a mandatory 30-second pit stop that injects 10% of total energy (3.85kWh) at 600kW, and it must be taken with the battery between 60% and 40% charged. Pit Boost races allow one Attack Mode activation; the rest allow two. Timing those power advantages around traffic decides most podiums.
The championship
Three titles are on offer: the Drivers' World Championship, the Teams' Championship, and the Manufacturers' Trophy — the last scored by each manufacturer's best two cars per race, with pole and fastest-lap points excluded. The 2025-26 calendar is the longest in series history, running December to August across seventeen races, and it is the Gen3 Evo's farewell season before the faster Gen4 car arrives. Ties are broken on countback: most wins, then most second places, and so on.
